Course Objectives: | This course aims to improve students’ the ability to read and critically analyze works of literature. Besides, the purpose of the course is to introduce undergraduate Literature students to the necessary steps, methods and tools of research in the study of literature. |

(3rd.ed.), pp: 3-15) What is Literature? (Writing Essays About Literature: A Guide and Style Sheet. pp: 15-36) What is Interpretation? (Writing Essays About Literature: A Guide and Style Sheet. pp: 8-13) How do we read and analyse literary works? Elements of a Literary Work. (Plot, elements of plot, setting, character, symbols, irony, themes, the title) Some Specialized Approaches to Interpreting Literature: New Criticism. ASSIGNMENT: Reading Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” (1927). (Writing Essays About Literature, p.396) Basic Steps in the Research Process Brainstorming Developing a Topic Producing a Thesis Statement Making an Outline Using Sources (Primary, Secondary, and e-sources) Documenting the Sources (MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (7th.ed). pp: 1-18) Taking Notes, Paraphrasing, Summarizing, Using direct quotes Looking through samples.
