Course Objectives: | This course is designed to introduce the essential elements of short story with various examples from the world literature in different periods. Throughout the semester, we will not only explore the generic characteristics of short story but also analyze how each story utilizes specific literary techniques and responds to the historical, social, political and economic concerns of their time. Focusing both on the form and the content, we will elaborate on and compare the patterns and problems that keep recurring in the stories. Though each week is dedicated to the uses and functions of a specific element of the short story, we will also investigate how the other elements are applied to the text in our discussions. |
