General Information

Istanbul Atlas University (English)Translation & Interpreting Department offers a program aiming to provide students with skills necessary for the 21st century. The program enables students to access information, to have an understanding of self-development, to be tech-savvy, to know at least one programming language, to grasp and be able to analyze both English and Turkish from a linguistic perspective, to write texts in both languages, to carry out textual analysis for the purpose of translation with the necessary theoretical and practical background.

Along with English, students get to learn a mandatory second language at the B1 level. In addition to grammatical competence in English, Turkish and the second foreign language, they also gain insights into the culture and geography related to the three languages, to come to the realization that language is one of the core elements of a culture and translate accordingly.

The 4-year program offers a syllabus made up of 8 semesters structured with the benefits of modern education techniques, scientific methodology and approaches and modern technology. In the senior year, the students specialize either in translation or in interpreting. Upon graduation, the students will have acquired the skills to translate and/or interpret texts/speeches of different types such as literature, technical, medical, social sciences, economy, political science and psychology. Interpreting courses are taught by active specialized interpreters in the Simultaneous Interpreting Lab equipped with the latest technology. Students get to learn what conference interpreting is, how it is done, what its types are and graduate with life-long learning skills, including those necessary for consecutive interpreting and community interpreting.
