Dersin Amaç ve İçeriği

Course Objectives: This course aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, strategies, and challenges of literary translation. By engaging with key theoretical concepts and practical exercises, students will develop the skills necessary to critically analyze and translate literary texts across various genres, including poetry, prose, and drama. The course seeks to foster an awareness of linguistic, cultural, and stylistic nuances, emphasizing the translator’s role as both an interpreter and a creative writer. Through hands-on translation practice, comparative analysis of multiple translations, and discussions on ethical and artistic dilemmas, students will refine their ability to produce accurate, contextually sensitive, and aesthetically compelling literary translations. Additionally, the course will introduce modern translation tools, including digital and AI-assisted technologies, while maintaining a focus on human creativity and critical thinking in the translation process.
Course Content: This course provides a comprehensive introduction to literary translation, examining itstheoretical foundations, practical challenges, and creative possibilities. Designed for students with an interest in translation studies and comparative literature, the course exploreshow literary texts travel across languages and cultures, highlighting the translator’s role as both interpreter and creator.
Through engagement with E. Clifford Landers’ Literary Translation: A Practical Guide (2001) as the primary textbook, students will analyze key theoretical concepts, translation strategies, and methodological approaches that shape the practice of literary translation. The course emphasizes critical thinking, textual analysis, and problem-solving in translating literary works, addressing questions of fidelity, style, tone, and the broader socio-cultural implications of translation.
Students willcritically examine real-world translation challenges, such as untranslatable words, cultural nuances, idioms, poetic structures, and historical contexts. By working with varied literary genres—including prose, poetry, and drama—students will gain practical experience in translation while reflecting on the ethical and artistic dilemmas inherent in the process.
