Course Objectives:

The aim of this course is to provide students with the ability to read and write texts written in Arabic alphabet during the period when Ottoman Turkish was used.

1 Introduction to Ottoman Turkish and Ottoman culture. Arabic alphabet, writing types and features.
2 Letters and their ligatures, transcription signs
3 Elif, vav, ye as auxiliary letters (vowels in Arabic and Persian)
4 Spelling of Turkish words (writing of vowels and consonants in Turkish words with Arabic letters)
5 Some features of the spelling of Arabic words, Persian and Arabic spelling rules (text reading)

7 Writing of word roots and affixes (construction, inflection), (text reading)
