Practical Information for Incoming Students

Emergency

Dear Students,

In case of an emergency, please dial 112 for immediate assistance. This number will connect you to:

  • Police (crime-related or life-threatening situations)
  • Medical Emergency Services (urgent medical care)
  • Fire Department (fires or rescue of animals in dangerous situations)

Banking Procedures

The account opening procedures may vary slightly from bank to bank, but the following documents are generally required:

  • A valid passport
  • Tax Identification Number
  • Proof of residence in Istanbul and proof of address in your home country

Almost all banks in Turkey offer high-quality internet and mobile banking services. Credit cards can be used at many ATMs.

The national currency of Turkey is the Turkish Lira (symbol: ₺, abbreviation: TRY). Banknotes are available in denominations of 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, and 5 lira. Coins, known as ‘kuruş’, come in 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 kuruş, and there are also 1 and 5 Turkish lira coins.

When you withdraw money from an ATM in Turkey, the transaction is processed according to the current exchange rate at that time.

Museum Card

The Museum Pass opens the doors to history of thousands of years and many civilizations formerly located in Türkiye. With this card, you can visit the historical and cultural treasures of Turkey—home to civilizations spanning over 9,000 years—free of charge and without waiting in line.

It is valid at more than 300 museums and archaeological sites across the country. The card costs 100.00 Turkish Lira for students and is valid for one year. To benefit from the student discount, you must present your student ID card.

The Museum Pass can be purchased at participating museums where it is valid. You can also find the list of museums and archaeological sites covered by the card on the official website.

Discounted Student Transportation Card (Istanbul Kart)

Istanbulkart is a contactless smart card designed for use on public transportation in Istanbul. You can use this card on all public transport vehicles. We recommend obtaining one to make your travel easier and more affordable.

You can apply online or visit one of the Istanbulkart Application Centers. You will need your residence permit/passport, student certificate, and a passport-sized photograph. You can obtain your student certificate from the Registrar’s Office located on the ground floor of the Vadi Campus.

After receiving your Istanbulkart, you can load credit and pay as you go, or you can purchase a discounted monthly travel pass that offers 200 rides for approximately €12.

Please visit the links below to find Istanbulkart application centers and bus routes.

Residence Permit and Insurance

Students who are citizens of countries exempt from visa requirements and plan to stay in Turkey for more than 90 days must complete their e-residence permit application online after arrival via https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr/. The official deadline to complete the application is 30 days; however, since processing times may be delayed and residence cards can take a long time to be issued, it is strongly recommended to complete the process as soon as possible.

Detailed information on visa exemptions can be found at https://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa. Students who are exempt from visa requirements do not need to apply for a student visa before arrival. Entering the country as a tourist and then applying for a student residence permit is sufficient.

Regarding Insurance:
One of the most important documents required for the residence permit application is a health insurance policy issued by an insurance company actively operating in Turkey, prepared in Turkish or English. Since certain specific clauses must be included in the policy for student residence permits, it is recommended to purchase the insurance after arrival. The cost is generally around €80.00–€100.00 per year (may vary according to your marital status, age etc.).

If you prefer to purchase insurance in your home country, please ensure that it complies with Turkish regulations and is accepted by hospitals in Türkiye (it needs to officially operate in Türkiye and validate the insurance policy under governmental system). The e-residence system will require a valid insurance policy number during the online application process.

Bilateral Social Security Agreements as Alternative Insurance Coverage in Türkiye

Students who are citizens (or eligible individuals) of the countries listed below may bring their Formularies (official document representing the bilateral social security agreement, labeled with the relevant agreement code) with them. Once these documents are activated, eligible individuals will be able to benefit from public healthcare services in Türkiye equivalent to those provided in their home countries.

Please note that private healthcare providers may have limited or no participation in this insurance scheme.

To be covered under the Turkish Public Health Insurance system, students must complete and bring an activation form and visit the Social Security Institution (SGK) office in relevant center in Istanbul, together with their Formularies.
