Course Objectives: | To give students general and basic information about the history of the Turkish language, to introduce its written sources and to provide them with the ability to use them. |
Course Content: | WEEKLY TOPICS AND RELATED PRELIMINARY PREPARATIONS Week 1 An overview of the Turkish language; Structure and main features of Turkish Week 2: The place of the Turkish language among world languages, Week 3 Language relations of the Turkish language within the Ural-Altaic language family. Kinship research and discussions. Sources and methods to be used in this regard. Week 4 The first written sources of Turkish and Old Turkish: Orhun, Yenisei inscriptions, first scientific research expeditions. The solution of the inscriptions was made by V.Thomsen, W. Radloff etc. Week 5: The first scientific research expeditions to the Uyghur region in Central Asia. Week 6 Uyghur Turkish and written works Week 7 Old Turkish Dialects in the West: Danubian Bulgarians, Volga Bulgarians, etc. 8th Week Midterm Exam Week 9 Turks' contact with Islamic religion and culture and the Middle Turkish period Week 10 Karakhanid Turkish and the first Quran translation Week 11 Kutadgu Bilig (Yûsuf Hâs Hâcib). Week 12 Divânü Lüğâti t-Türk (Mahmûd el-Kâşgarî), Atabetü’l-Hakâyık (Edîb Ahmed Yükseknekî) Week 13 Khwarezm Turkish and written works: Mukaddimetü'l-Edeb (Zemahşerî), Week 14 Kısasü'l-Enbiyâ (Rabgûzî) and other works Week 15 Final Exam |
